Editing Reality TV: The Easily Accessible, High-Paying Hollywood Job That Nobody Knows about

In the ever-expanding world of reality TV, editors wield incredible creative power. They often are responsible for creating a scene s or even an episode s storyline from nothing but a rambling tangle of raw footage. In this sense, they are a show s writers, drawing engaging drama from a murky pool of images and comments.

As reality TV invades every channel and time slot, the demand for editors who are comfortable with and conversant in the genre s styles, formats, and requirements increases daily. Editing Reality TV: The Easily Accessible, High-Paying Hollywood Job that Nobody Knows About is the first book to address this burgeoning gig.

Written in an appropriately casual tone by an author who is well-seasoned in all sorts of reality TV, this guide provides sound advice about finding, landing, and keeping a reality TV editing job. In doing so, it also details the editor s duties and responsibilities, while providing a wealth of invaluable tips and tricks for doing the job well.

  1. What I really enjoyed… The other reviews make it clear how helpful this book is to a reader wanting to learn the “how to” so I won’t repeat that. What I will note is how fun it was to read. Jeff’s breezy style kept me interested the whole way without sacrificing the quality of what I was learning. And the initial positioning that being an editor in this space is really being a creator — a writer in fact — got me jazzed from the get go. A book I will always keep at the ready.

  2. Fun to read and incredibly helpful A really engaging read, and a true insider account of the business, necessary for those trying to break into the world of reality editing, and even for those already working who just need a useful toolbox of tips and tricks. Written in such a casual, lighthearted and unpretentious tone, you feel like you’re getting advice from a good friend.

  3. Excellent resource I teach graduate and undergraduate editing classes and this book is so helpful to my students as they learn to think about how incredibly important editing is to the story telling process. Jeff Dawson is an excellent teacher and even though I have been editing professionally for many years I learn something every time I open this book.
