In case you didn’t know, I’ve gone back to school.
Not actually in a classroom, but through MOOC – Massive Online Open Courses. The one I’ve started with is “Learning How to Learn: Powerful mental tools to help you master tough subjects,” offered by Coursera.
The companion book for this course, A Mind for Numbers, How to excel at Math and Science,(available on Amazon) is worth having in your library and actually reading. Like her presence on the course videos, Dr. Oakley explains a very complicated subject in ways a commoner like me can not only understand, but, like the course instructs, with timed focused learning sessions, followed by breaks, enjoy and retain the information.
I’ve been working hard at working smart and keeping up with the course. The four-week program takes about 2 to 3 hours per week and most of the time is spent watching videos.
The book provides nearly the same information offered in the course materials, but there are some extra tidbits. And, I know I will be referring to this book long after I’ve finished the course. I might even be loaning it out!
I’m recommending this book and the course to those of you out there who might think you’re too old or just not smart enough to go back to school. I’ve been thinking those things too until I realized it wasn’t me, it was my habits. And habits can be changed! It just takes time and effort.
